Sgt. James Mather Kyd 1st Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
My father, James Kyd, was a career soldier, joining the Argylls prior to WW2. He was reticent to talk about his wartime experiences but I can confirm that he was captured on Crete in 1941. The records show that he finished the war in Stalag 383 but I have not been able to trace his movements between capture and liberation. After the war he continued his army career with postings in Palestine and Egypt. He met his wife Mary in Egypt when she was serving in WRAC. He later took a commission into the RASC and completed his 40 years service as a Major. He died in 1984.

Edmond Stewart 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
My uncle, Eddie, Edmond Stewart, was in the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders when they were posted to Palestine. I have photo evidence of this and one of the stories I was told by my cousin was that he was nearly court-martialed for leaving his truck when the convoy he was in was being strafed.Edmond Thomson
Pte. Francis McInally 1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Francis McInally was captured during the Battle for Crete and was held prisoner until the war ended.A McInally
Pte. George Linnen Wardlaw 1st Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
George Wardlaw initially served with the Royal Artillery and then the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders prior to WW2. He served in Palestine and, on the outbreak of WW2, the Battalion moved into Egypt, mainly fighting Italians. As Crete came under attack by the Germans around 20th May 1941, his Battalion was shipped into the ongoing battle. They were roughly deployed to protect the airfield and choke points. With incessant air attacks, the RN withdrew, and what was left on the Island surrendered to German troops.
He was shipped to Greece and through the Balkan states to Berlin. Conditions were very difficult on the cattle trains and food was limited and many died. He eventually moved from various Stalags and work camps, was injured by allied bombing of the Dresden/Liepzigrail yards doing forced labour.
George was eventually released by US Forces at Stalag IV-G. He returned home and continued to serve in a number of regiments, regular and TA, settling back into the miner's home in Kirkcaldy.

Pte. Robert Gordon 1st Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
Bobby Gordon joined the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders 1940 and was a cook at Stirling Castle. He was a regimental boxing champion in 1940, his trophies and memorabilia in the Sargeant's Mess Stirling Castle. His Commanding officer was Col. Graham.Charles W.B. Gordon
Pte. James Thomas Boyle C Coy.1st Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (d.21st March 1945)
James Boyle was killed in the early hours prior to the regiment moving to cross the River Senio near Ravenna Italy. He was killed with 4 other regimental members when a German mortar shell exploded in the fox hole they were in.The story the family was given was that the other boys died instantly and James shortly after. He is buried in the allied cemetery near Ravenna.

Tom Barker 1st Btn. Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
My regiment was 1st Btn Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, and I was a resident in Stalag 4B for two of my four years as a POW. I was wounded and captured on Crete in June. For two years I worked slave labour, then Harry Tenny - who had been shot down during a raid - swapped identities with me so he could get back to the UK and the RAF, so that he could bomb Germany again. I told him "If you do come back to bomb, just look out for me wavin' me hanky and don't drop any near me."Tom Barker
