2nd Battalion, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

The 2nd Battalion of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders was a regular unit of the British Army. The 2nd Battalion were already in Malaya at the start of the Second World War. They fought the Japanese the full length of Malaya and held the Causeway into Singapore. The whole battalion became Prisoners of War of the Japanese after the final battles of Singapore.

In 1942 the 15th Battalion, who were serving in Orkney, was reconstituted as the new 2nd Battalion. They saw action in the Normandy battles and across western Europe, as far as the banks of the Elbe by May 1945.

Cpl. Gerald Edward Cannings 2nd Btn. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

Gerald Edward Cannings

G.E. Cannings cap badge with tartan

Gerald Cannings was my Dad, who volunteered to go into the Army even though he had a protected occupation as a aircraft fitter. He fought in France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He landed in France on D+6 and went right though the war to Germany, where he met my Mother. He never told me a lot about the war apart from he got shot in the foot by one of his mates messing about with a gun. He got married to my Mother in Germany and lost his stripes for that! After the end of the war, they lived in Germany for 15 years, then they came back to England, to Coventry, and he went back to aircraft fitting. Later they moved down to Bournemouth, where he lived the rest of his life.
