204746 Pte. Thomas Bell Shepherd British Army 3rd Btn. Northumberland Fusiliers from:154, Sheild St, Newcastle upon Tyne My grandfather Thomas Bell Shepherd joined the 3rd Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers c 1915, transferring to the 1st Platoon of the Machine Gun Corps where he fought in the Battle of the Somme. At some point he was wounded by shrapnel and spent time recovering at Frodsham Auxiliary Military Hospital, Cheshire, where he met local girl Minnie May Duncalf. He transferred to the Royal Flying Corps at the beginning of 1918. He ended the war as a 2nd Lieutenant in the RAF. On February 1st 1919, he married Minnie May, my grandmother, in Aberdeen. He was at that time posted at Longside Airship Station, near Peterhead, Scotland. By 28th February 1919 he was transferred to the unemployed list. Additional Information: | Thomas Bell Shepherd was born at Vincent Street Newcastle upon Tyne in 1894. Hewas the son of Thomas Bell Shepherd and Elizabeth Shepherd (nee Frazer) married in 1877 at Newcastle upon Tyne.
Thomas Bell had a brother called Richard Bell Shepherd who was in the Army Service Corps and from a photo seems to have fought in WW1
He married but had no children and died in the 1960s.
