Pte. Arthur Scarle
British Army Royal Berkshire Regiment
from:Birmingham
Arthur Scarle was my Grandfather. Unfortunately, I know next to nothing about his service years. As far as his grand children were concerned, he never spoke of his time in the war except to say that, "It was not for the ears of children".
He didn't die in service, in fact he made it through active service in both wars and died peacefully in his sleep at the grand age of 86 in the late 1970's.
After the passing of my own parents I came into possession of his service medals and this is the only way I got to know his rank, number and regiment whilst serving during World war I.
All I can tell you is that despite the horrors he must have encountered, he was a fine man and much loved by all.
