Lewis Younie Black died on Saturday 1st of July 1916 aged 21, whilst serving with the 20th Battalion (Tyneside Scottish) Northumberland Fusiliers.
Son of Christina and William Black of Jarrow (native of Scotland) he was born in 1894 in Jarrow. On the 1911 census, he is recorded as Lewis Younie Black age 17, Apprentice Carpenter in Shipyard is with his widowed mother Christina Black and family at 4 Wylam Street, Jarrow. He enlisted in Newcastle.
