My Grandfather, L/Sgt W J Askew, was awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal at Zonnebeke on the 23rd Oct 1914.

Additional Information:

The citation for the D.C.M. is as follows. "For conspicuous courage and great ability on 23Rd October at Zonnebeke, when he voluntarily took out a patrol to hold ground 300 yards in front of our trenches and placing his small party in pairs, 150 yards apart, held up the enemy's attack for 3 hours, and then succeeded in retiring under heavy fire from both flanks"
