Pte. Walter James Cowie

British Army 1st Bat. B Co. Gordon Highlanders

from:Middleton by Youlgreave, Derbyshire

(d.23rd Aug 1916)

Walter Cowie was one of three brothers who fought in World War 1. His brother, Leonard also served with the Gordons whilst his other sibling, Alan John (my great granddad) served with the Sherwood Foresters. Walter was the only one who failed to return home after the war, he was killed during the Somme offensive.

Additional Information:

Pte S/12873 W.J.Cowie is buried in La Neuville British Cemetery Corbie. His name is recorded on the memorial tablet in All Saints Church Youlgreave. He was just 23 yrs old when he fell.

The Youlgreave 1914-1918 Community Group are researching the men & women of the parish and would like to hear from anyone whose family have connections with the village(s).
