216829 Pte. William John Newman British Army 1st Btn. Somerset Light Infantry (d.26th Aug 1914) My Grandfather William John Newman of the 1st Somersets died on 26th August so must have been in the Battle of Le Cateau. He was only in France for 4 days.
Update: William was the husband of Alice Mary Newman, of 274, Bickenhall, Taunton, Somerset. He died aged 26, and is commemorated on The La Ferté-sous-Jouarre Memorial. Additional Information: | Not only was William killed on this day, but his brotherGeorge, aged 29 who was with him was also killed at the same time. William has recently been added to a lovely memorial at Batcombe Somerset ,where he worked on a farm at the age of 13. His brother George, whose granddaughter Mrs Heather Bailes from Bradford on Avon is commemorated on a memorial in Bath.
On 26th of August 2014 exactly 100 years following his death, Williams medals were presented to the Somerset records Office at Taunton museum by his great great Grand-son Benjamin Newman. It was rather ironic that there were over 30 direct relations of William as he was childless when killed in 1926, my father was born on the 27th February 1915 six months to the day after his dad was killed. Mike Newman
