from:New Zealand
(d.29th Oct 1916)
Prior to the war John Braithwaite had worked as a journalist in Australia. After being incarcerated for repeatedly being AWOL, he was accused of instigating a prison riot, although he claimed that he only involved himself in an attempt to calm it.
At 0605 on 29 October 1916 Braithwaite was shot by a firing squad at Rouen for mutiny.
He was posthumously pardoned on 14 September 2000, when New Zealand's Pardon for Soldiers of the Great War Act became law.
