219363 L/Cpl. William Cresswell British Army 2nd Btn. Essex Regiment from:2 Charncey Place, Writtle, Chelmsford, Essex (d.1st Jul 1916) My grandfather's brother, William Cresswell was a regular soldier who had served through the Boer War and I have his campaign medal for South Africa 1901-1902 Transvaal and Orange Free State. I believe he returned home wounded in the early part of the war but was killed on the first day in the Battle of the Somme. He was 39 years old so had served at least 17 years and has no known grave and is commemorated by name on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Additional Information: | L/Cpl.
