Pte. James Mackill
British Army 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles
from:Enniskillen
James Mackill was my Grandfather. Having served in South Africa, James re-enlisted in 1915. At the time he states his age as 42, although he would have been almost 46 then.
His short service history shows he rejoined the Royal Irish Fusiliers 3rd Btn at Derry 1915 regimental number 26392.
He transferred to 1st Btn. Royal Irish Rifles on 31/1/1916. He sailed to India in February of that year.
He returned from service in India suffering from TB, and was treated at Colchester Hospital as well as London before being pensioned off on medical grounds. He died at the family home in Enniskillen in 1920 leaving a wife and young family of eight children.
