My Grandfather Joseph Simpson joined the DLI in 1914. He was injured at the Bombardment at Heugh Battery in Hartlepool on 16th Dec. 1914 when a piece of shrapnel went through his cheek. He was rescuing a mate from the beach when he was hit and his gun was blown up. He later made this into a door stop.
He was mentioned in dispatches.
