225298 Pte. James Martin Roughan British Army 9th (Queens Royal) Lancers James Martin Roughan was born on the 1st March 1893 and when in his teens, he lied about his age and joined the 9th Lancers as a boy soldier.
He was mobilized in August 1914, by which time he was serving with the 9th Lancers and he took part in the charge of the 9th Lancers at Audregnies on 24th August 1914 against massed German Infantry.
He later took part in actions at the Marne and the Ainse, Ypres and Messines. He was wounded in March 1915 and returned to England. He rejoined in August 1916 and became an unpaid lance corporal in the same year. He became a paid Lance Corporal in October 1917, was wounded in March 1918, and was returned to England. Jim was present at the founding of the 9th Lancers old comrades association in 1921. He is listed in the 9th Lancers Museum Book as 774 J Roughan wounded 3/03/15 also 29/08/18.
The Roughan family has a long association with the 9th Lancers and James's father, Troop Sergeant Major John Roughan served with the 9th Lancers between 1863 and 1884 and served in Afghanistan and his brother John Edward Roughan, served in the 17th Lancers and later the Queens Regiment.
Jim died in 1985 in Ashford, Middlesex rejoining his wife Alice May Dora "Peggy" Vickers who died twenty-one years earlier. He also had two half brothers, Oswald Stephen and Herbert Joseph Roughan, both 6th Dragoons served in the Boer war and WW1.
