225672 Pte. Matthew Caine British Army 11th Battalion Manchester Regiment from:New Springs, Wigan (d.17th Aug 1917) Matthew Caine was a father of 4 who died aged 34. Before joining the army, he worked as a collier for the Wigan Coal and Iron Co. He enlisted in October 1914. He was a stretcher bearer with the Manchester Regiment.
He was killed whilst trying to save one of his comrades, 17th August 1917. His body was never found. He is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial.
