Alfred Knight joined up as a boy soldier in the Grenadier Guards and was later transferred to the 1st Gloucesters, with whom he saw much foreign service. Serving 12 years in India and then in the Boer War where he was taken prisoner. Upon his return to England he was stationed in various depots and was at one time recruiting sergeant for the Gloucesters in Stroud, before retiring from the service.
On the out break of the Great War he rejoined the colours and accompanied the 9th Battalion to France, serving at a time when heavy losses were suffered. He was promoted to Warrant Officer in 1915.
Subsequently he transferred to the Duke of Cornwall Light Infantry where he obtained a commission as Lieutenant and saw service in the East. Upon his return to home on the 26th January 1921, he retired from the army but continued to be associated with the Territorials of Gloucestershire.
