Rflmn. John Johnson Cranidge
British Army 12th Btn. King's Royal Rifle Corps
from:Crowle, Lincs
(d.29th March 1918)
Additional Information:
John Johnson Cranidge was my grandfather’s brother. He was baptised in Crowle on 21st April 1895 when his father Peter was a miller. My grandfather (Charles), John and another brother, Margrave, all volunteered. Charles and Margrave were lucky enough to survive the war. Each fought in different regiments. John signed up in Crowle, Lincs on 9th December 1915 joining the 21st Battalion The Kings Royal Rifles (of a total of 22 Battalions in the KRR) also called the Yeoman Rifles. His sign up paper says he was a grocers assistant (1911 census says for Cooperative) living in the Mason’s Arms (his father now an innkeeper) and was 20 years and nine months old. The form said he was assigned to Army Service which was deleted and overwritten Yeoman Rifles. The 21 Bn KRR was disbanded in March 1918 and he was transferred to the 12th Bn KRR. In March 1918 the12th Bn KRR fought in the Battle of St Quentin (21 to 23 March), held positions in the zone Vaux to Rumignon to cover the retirement of forward divisions (the last major offensive by Germany in the war), and then held those position checking the enemy advance. They also fought in the Battle of Rosieres (26-27 March). John died of wounds on the 29th March, probably received in one of these actions. He is remembered at Poziers along with others with no known grave.
