Pte. Charles Hyron Wells MM.

British Army 7th Battalion East Surrey Regiment

from:Cadoxton, Barry, Wales

Additional Information:

Charles enlisted in the first month of the war.He bravely served on the Western Front and was wounded, gassed and buried under soil during his time there.

When asked by his many children why he had been awarded the Military Medal,he replied that it was for "selling hot cross buns to the Germans".In reality he had crawled out from his line under machine gun fire during a German gas attack to rescue soldiers trapped on barbed wire.
