233874 Lt. William Armel Yearwood British Army 122nd Coy. Machine Gun Corps from:Bridgetown, Barbados Armel Yearwood left Barbados for England in order to enlist with the British Army in 1915. I have found his enlistment dated 29th July 1915. He was first sent to the Army Ordinance Corps as he had had experience in handling mules. He grew up on a sugar plantation in Barbados. He transferred to the 122nd Machine Gun Corps and made a Temp Lieutenant 1st November 1916. He was invalided out on 21st July 1917 with Trench Fever. He only rejoined the regiment a year later on 4th July 1918. He was wounded in action on 24th September 1918. On this occasion a shell landed near him. He regained consciousness and thought he had lost his leg. Fortunately, only his boot was blown off by the blast. The gentlemen riding next to him died, as did both horses.
