From humble beginnings in a Northamptonshire hamlet, Robert Furness had traveled, effectively, 28 miles in the first 33 years of his life. With the onset of World War One, Robert had no real option over the next 2 years but to travel, effectively, 260 miles to his death in Cable Trench in Cherisy, France.
In 1916 he was in action in The Battle of Albert, The Battle of Bazentin Ridge, The Battle of Trones Wood, The Battle of Thiepval Ridge, The Battle of the Ancre Heights, The Battle of the Ancre.
In 1917 during Operations on the Ancre, The German retreat to the Hindenburg Line, The Third Battle of the Scarpe.
