Pte. Acton Balloch
British Army 3rd Btn. E Coy. Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
from:Paisley
Acton Balloch was my maternal grandfather. I have his pay book and medals that show his service number as 3/7164. His wife, Rose, died after giving birth to his son Charles. He died after the war from his wounds and they left four orphans, Annie, James, Cathy [my mum] and Charles.
Rose's mum cared for them even though she had a shell shocked son to care for as well. His name was Charlie Sweeney [22359] and he lied about his age when he enlisted. I don't know in which unit he served.
Like so many other young men of that generation Acton joined up on 5th of August 1914, the day after Great Britain declared war. He was discharged on 26th of May 1919 as being no longer physically fit for war service Para 392 KR.
