Herbert Walter Penton (aka Bert) was born on 21 December 1885 at 45 Henry Street, Clerkenwell, London. His parents were George & Sarah Ann Penton (Nee Mason). He had 4 siblings; George Henry, Richard who died aged 1 years old, Charles Arthur and Dorothy Annie. The 1911 Census indicates that Bert was 23 years old and single and living at home with his parents and siblings at 24 Dacre Street, Lee. His occupation was an Insurance Clerk. Bert married Mildred Lydia May Wadman on 26 August 1911 at St Margaret's Church, Lee, London. They had 2 children Joyce Ruth born 1914 and Marguerite Joan who was born 1917 and died 1920.

Bert was a Private in the 20th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and was sadly killed in action on 16 April 1917 in France. He is buried at Heninel-Croisilles Road British cemetery in France. His headstone reads 'Though Death divides memories cling'. His wife was living at 9 Glenton Road, Lewisham at the time of his death. My father was named after him. REST IN PEACE BERT.
