Lt. Arthur Howard K. McCallum

Royal Air Force 25 Squadron

Arthur McCallum was held in Schweidnitz POW camp.

Additional Information:

My father Arthur McCallum is shown in the photograph with his friend Howard Costello. Arthur's plane was shot down in 1916 and he was taken and remained a prisoner until the end of hostilities. He had severely damaged his right elbow when the plane in which he was an Observer crashed , which may account for his not participating in escape attempts from Schweidnitz. He did mention an escape plan which was betrayed and the escapees shot as they emerged from their tunnel. He emerged with the rank of Captain. After the war, he was transferred back to the regiment (73rd Highland CEF) from which he had been seconded to the RFC/RAF. He returned to his native British Columbia, to spend time in a tuberculosis sanitarium. During WW II Arthur joined the RCAF achieving the rank of Wing Commander, and was awarded the MBE (Military). He died in 1973.
