Private Thomas Hurdis embarked on A10 HMAT Afric at Sydney on 3rd November 1916 and disembarked at Plymouth, England on 9th January 1917. After training at Hurdcott Camp, Wiltshire, England, he was shipped to France to join his unit, the 59th Australian Infantry Battalion.
He fought in the Second Battle of Bullecourt, France, in May 1917.
He fought in the Battle of Polygon Wood, Belgium, 26th of September 1917 where he was severely wounded by gunshot wounds to the face and right arm. He was transferred to an Advanced Dressing Station on the Menin Road, Ypres and then to a Casualty Clearing Station at Remy Siding, Belgium. He was then transferred by ambulance train to the 16th USA General Hospital at Le Treport, France where he died of his wounds on 3rd of October 1917. He is buried in Mont Huon Military Cemetery, Le Treport, France.
