Pte. Arthur Constant
British Army 10th Btn. Gloucestershire Regiment
(d.31st August 1916)
Arthur Constant served with the 10th Btn. Gloucestershire Regiment.
Additional Information:
The 10th Gloucester's War Diary states that the battalion was moved into the front line at High Wood on the Somme on August 29th. This was a very dangerous place and the many assaults on the wood had left it a splintered wreck full of shell holes and strewn with the dead of both sides. The Gloucesters were heavily shelled in their crude trenches and Private Reginald Fennell, also of the 10th Gloucesters, stated in his personal diary "plenty of shelling. Several casualties." Records show that the battalion lost 15 men killed between 29th Aug and 31st Aug when they were withdrawn to Mametz Wood. Several more died of wounds.
