My Great Grandfather, George Holland lived in Tunstall, Staffordshire and worked in the local coal mines. His son George Holland was born 11th of April 1914, he married Mary Annie Woodcock in January 1915
George enlisted with the 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers on the 3rd of February 1915 and was sent to Hounslow for military training.
He arrived in France on the 15th of June 1915 and was assigned to work with the 174th Tunnelling Company, Royal Engineers.
He is mentioned in the book Brief but Glorious, A brief History of the 8th Battalion on Page 20. Reported to be Blown up in a sap trench on 11th of July 1915 aged 23.
He is remembered on the the Tunstall Town War Memorial in Staffordshire
and The Ploegsteert War Memorial in Belgium.
