I have a book written by Captain DP Grant on the 1/4th (Hallamshire) Btn. York and Lancaster Regiment 1914-1919, it records "the success of the attacks on the steelworks was largely due to the fine example of coolness and courage which he set and to the skilful way in which he handled his men, while supervising the consolidation of the captured position under heavy shell fire he was wounded in the face and leg, but although suffering severely from shock and hemorrhage, he refused to leave his company until the battalion was relieved on the night of 3rd/4th November".
