Lionel Charles Bently
British army 12th Btn. Sherwood Foresters
Additional Information:
This was my grandfather. He was born in 1899 into a middle-class Notts family with aristocratic connections. On the outbreak of war it was expected that he would eventually enlist for officer training (or strings would be pulled). But grandfather detested any kind of snobbery or unfairness and lied about his age in order to sign up as a private. He was wounded at battle of Loos, 1915. After the war he remained in the army as what was then called a “gentleman ranker”, transferring to the Beds and Herts Regiment. After service in the UK and India he rose to the rank of sergeant before retiring to join the War Dept in 1940 as a civil servant. He died in 1957. (Information from my father, the late Maj. HCR Bently).
