Pte. Joseph William Wright
British Army 15th Btn. Durham Light Infantry
from:Sheffield
(d.1st Jul 1916)
Joseph Wright was my great great grandfather.
My family knew for many years that Joseph had died in the great war but apart from that we did not know anything more. That was until the 10th of November 2018 when my mother was reading our local newspaper, the Sheffield Star, and we discovered a link to the War Graves Commission website.
We decided to try searching his name to find out of we could find out anything, such as if he had a grave or where he fought during the war. To our amazement we found a name which seemed to match to the very little info we knew about him.
It turned out that Joseph had died on the 1st of July 1916, the very first day of the battle of the Somme and that he was buried in the Gordon Dump Cemetery.
Sadly, he died leaving a wife and four small children.
I am very happy to have found him because now he is a real person to me instead of a vague idea from the past.
