QMS. William Johnston Matthew
British Army 11th Btn Royal Scots
from:Berwick
(d.9th Apr 1917)
William Matthew was my great-grandfather who was killed in action 9th April 1917. He is buried in Bailleul Road, West Cemetery, St Laurent-Blangy, France.
His first 3 years of service was with the Black Watch, then he served for 9 years in India. He was 36 years of age when he was demobbed at Gosport after 18 years of service.
He wanted to serve in France and was with the Royal Scots when he was killed at the age of 39. His name is misspelt as Matthews on the war memorial in Berwick.
