Local newspaper The Aberdare Leader dated 6th of July 1918 has a picture and a caption saying, Hirwaun Man Wins MM. It then goes on to say: News has been received that Bombardier Edward John Davies has been awarded the Military Medal for rescuing wounded under heavy shell fire at Kemmel on 25th of April 1918. Previous to enlisting in January 1915 he was employed at Tower Colliery Hirwaun.
