British Army 248th Siege Battery Royal Garrison Artillery

Harry Freeman was killed in action at the First Battle of Passchendaele, age 40, just 16 days before his daughter, my grandmother, was born. Harry’s friend, Charlie Tree, later married his widow, Lily, keeping a promise to look after her and his 13 children that he would do so if he was killed.
Originally buried at Pill Box Cemetery, Harry was later exhumed to be buried at Hooge Crater Cemetery
