L/Sgt. Frank Button

British Army 4th Btn. Royal Fusiliers

from:Friday Road, Erith, Kent.

(d.23rd Aug 1914)

My great uncle was killed by a snipers bullet at Mons in Belgium on the 23rd of August 1914. He is buried at St.Symphorien cemetery in Belgium. R.I.P. Uncle.. I have no other info. other than that his military record may of been destroyed in the bombing of London records office in ww2. I have found my other great uncles record on the C.W.G.C. Alec Button, he was torpedoed in 1914 on the Bayano and was subsequently killed.

Additional Information:

The HMS Bayano was torpedoed and lost on March 11, 1915. There were only 26 survivors from 207 sailors aboard. Alec Button was my great great uncle, as was Frank Button.

Frank Button was my Great Great Uncle (Brother of my great grandmother). He was actually killed on Aug 23, 1914 at Mons in one of the first engagements of the war. His rank was L/Sgt and his regimental number was L/13367. I hope this helps. Also, the Bayano was torpedoed in the spring of 1915. Great great Uncle Alec's service number is 228924. I have a copy of his service record if you would like it. If you have any information regarding brothers Henry (died pre-WW1 while in the RN from appendicitis) or Lionel who also joined the Navy, I would love to hear about it.

Since my last correspondence, I have found out that Frank Button was a Lance Sargent in the Royal Fusiliers, who was killed at the retreat of Mons on the 23rd August 1914, two days after the start of WW1. There is a monument to the memory of the lads who died in Erith Kent including Alec Button and Frank Button's name at St John's church Belvedere Kent.

Can you help us to add to our records?

The names and stories on this website have been submitted by their relatives and friends. If your relations are not listed please add their names so that others can read about them

Did your relative live through the Great War? Do you have any photos, newspaper clippings, postcards or letters from that period? Have you researched the names on your local or war memorial?

If so please let us know.

Do you know the location of a Great War "Roll of Honour?"

We are very keen to track down these often forgotten documents and obtain photographs and transcriptions of the names recorded so that they will be available for all to remember.

Help us to build a database of information on those who served both at home and abroad so that future generations may learn of their sacrifice.

Celebrate your own Family History

Celebrate by honouring members of your family who served in the Great War both in the forces and at home. We love to hear about the soldiers, but also remember the many who served in support roles, nurses, doctors, land army, muntions workers etc.

Please use our Family History resources to find out more about your relatives. Then please send in a short article, with a photo if possible, so that they can be remembered on these pages.

The free section of The Wartime Memories Project is run by volunteers.

This website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.
