World War 1 One ww1 wwII greatwar great 1914 1918 first battalion regiment

During the Great War Britain's industry was largely turned over to the manufacture of munitions and war supplies. With much of the male workforce serving in the armed forces, women took over traditional male roles, working alongside the remaining men. There were no reserved occupations during the Great War but some men were released or exempted from serving in the forces to undertake vital war work. As the Uboat threat increased, the volme of imported food was much reduced, and home grown supplies became more important. The volume of shipping being sunk, gave rise to an increase in shipbuilding to replace the losses and expand the fleet. Transport and policing roles were also undertaken by women. The number of wounded brought home from the front meant an vast increase in the number of hospital and convalencent beds.

The free section of The Wartime Memories Project is run by volunteers.

This website is paid for out of our own pockets, library subscriptions and from donations made by visitors. The popularity of the site means that it is far exceeding available resources and we currently have a huge backlog of submissions.

If you are enjoying the site, please consider making a donation, however small to help with the costs of keeping the site running.
