About
RAF Fulbeck - USAAF Station 488
RAF Fulbeck was Fulbeck was located three mile west of Fulbeck Felton. The land was requisitioned as a grass strip relief landing ground for RAF Cranwell and Barkston Heath in 1940. Building work to transform it into a bomber airfield began in February 1942, becoming fully operational in December. The base was used for training until it was transferred to the USAAF in August 1943 becoming Station 488. In late September 1944 Fulbeck returned to RAF control and 5 Group flew ops until the end of the war. The airfield became home to a maintenance unit and closed in 1970 and some buildings and infrastructure remains. A memorial was erected at the location of the main gates in 1988.Squadrons based at RAF Fulbeck - USAAF Station 488 during the Second World War.
