RAF Ayr



   RAF Ayr also known as RAF Heathfield was on the west coast of Scotland in Ayrshire. It was built in 1940 and handed over the the Fleet Air Arm in 1944 and became HMS Wagtail. Today teh site is occupied by housing and a golf course.

10th November 1941 Back to Drem

11th December 1941 Aircraft accident at Ayr

6th April 1942 New Spitfire Squadron formed

1st May 1942 Spitfire Squadron operational

25th July 1942 Escort duty

12th August 1942 Gunnery training

15th August 1942 Spitfire Squadron moves south

26th September 1942 Ground attack training

28th March 1943 Relocated

3rd August 1943 Squadron moved on

6th August 1943 Operations over Europe

11th August 1943 Squadron receives aircraft at last

31st August 1943 Rocket firing Hurricanes delivered

1st September 1943 Training programme planned

13th September 1943 Pilots missing on exrcise

13th October 1943 Rocket firing practice

14th September 1943 Search for missing aircraft

15th September 1943 Missing pilot found

16th September 1943 Second missing pilot found

18th September 1943 Shortage of experienced pilots

25th September 1943 Full establishment

1st October 1943 Bomber protection

24th October 1943 Pilot killed on low flying exercise

29th October 1943 Mid-air collision

15th November 1943 Typhoons delivered

19th November 1943 Influenza

25th November 1943 Collision on the ground

30th November 1943 Equpped

8th December 1943 Reassigned to Bomber Command and re-located

29th December 1943 Pilots killed in mid-air collision

7th January 1944 Relocated and new C.O.

11th January 1944 Training programme

15th February 1944 Refitting

30th March 1944 Change of Role

  • 1st of September 2024 marks 25 years since the launch of the Wartime Memories Project. Thanks to everyone who has supported us over this time.
  • The Wartime Memories Project has been running for 25 years. If you would like to support us, a donation, no matter how small, would be much appreciated, annually we need to raise enough funds to pay for our web hosting and admin or this site will vanish from the web.
  • 19th Nov 2024 - Please note we currently have a huge backlog of submitted material, our volunteers are working through this as quickly as possible and all names, stories and photos will be added to the site. If you have already submitted a story to the site and your UID reference number is higher than 264989 your information is still in the queue, please do not resubmit, we are working through them as quickly as possible.

Want to find out more about your relative's service? Want to know what life was like during the War? Our Library contains an ever growing number diary entries, personal letters and other documents, most transcribed into plain text.




Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.
