RAF Lagens Terceira, Azores    In late 1943 an airfield was built at Lagens Terceira in the Azores for Submarine search and destroy operations. It was also used as a refuel and service point for Transport Aircraft from Canada and the USA. It was known as RAF Lagens or alternatively RAF Lajes Field. The airfield is still an operational base for Air sea rescue by the Portugese Air Force and the American Air force and is also used by Civilian Aircraft.   9th November 1943 U-Boat search 18th November 1943 Detachment 26th November 1943 U-Boats attacked 27th November 1943  Wellington shot down 1st December 1943 Maintenance base at Gibraltar 27th December 1943 U-Boat attacked 29th December 1943 U-Boat damaged Wellington 1st January 1944 Submarine survived attack 2nd January 1944 Change of command 13th January 1944 U-Boat surrendered 16th January 1944 Airmen in dinghy spotted 8th February 1944 Detachment Reinforced 10th March 1944 Ditched in the Atlantic 12th March 1944 U-Boat found and attacked April 1944 Return to England 20th April 1944 Detachment withdrawn If you can provide any additional information, please add it here. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home. If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.
