Sgt. Cyril Vivian Hawke 2nd Btn. Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry
Cyril Hawke was called up in October 1941 on his 18th birthday. He trained in Bodmin and Northern Ireland. Serving with C Company 2nd Btn, Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry he went overseas to North Africa in 1942, stayed until end of campaign in May 1943. He then went to Italy landing at Salerno in autumn 1943 and fought through Naples, Cassino, Rome and ended up in Northern Italy by the end of 1944. He was sent to Greece in December 1944 and then transferred to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment (reason not known) and served in Greece until end of the war. He arrived home in 1945 and re-equipped to go to the Far East but whilst sailing through the Med the war in the Far East ended and they were taken to Libya to carry out garrison duties in Benghazi. Later he went to Palestine for garrison duties there. He was discharged in Canterbury on 5th of June 1947.Keith Hawke
Sgt. Albert John Tomlinson 1st Btn Hampshire Regiment
Albert Tomlinson served with the 1st Hampshire Regiment and took part in the the landing in Sicily in 1942.Simon Anderson
Pte. Leonard Dyer 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment (d.6th June 1944)
Leonard Dyer was my nan's cousin. I don't know much about him unfortunately.Sonia Williams
Pte. Artrhur Farrar 2/7th Btn. Duke of Wellington West Riding Regiment (d.6th June 1944)
My late Uncle Arthur Farrar joined the Duke of Wellington West Riding Regiment on 19th of October 1939 and he disembarked in France with the 2/7th Battalion as part of the BEF on 18th of April 1940. He was evacuated on the 13th of June 1940.After his father Jonah Drake Farrar died in late January 1941 he joined his older brother Jonah Drake Farrar, my father, in the 11th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. They were then both sent to serve in the Middle East and North Africa in February 1943. In May 1943 they were both compulsory transferred to the 1st Battalion, Hampshire Regiment with whom they were both involved in the invasions of both Sicily and Italy before being returning to the UK in early November 1943.
They were then in training as assault troops for the invasion of Normandy in 1944. On D-day 1944 they were both part of A Company 1st Battalion Hampshire Regiment which was first on Gold Beach at 7.32 am on 6th of June 1944. My late father's landing craft was the first to land and Arthur's followed shortly thereafter. Unfortunately Arthur was killed instantly as he set foot on the beach by a mortar shell.
He is buried in the Bayeux Commonwealth Military Cemetery. He was just 25 years old and had not the war intervened he had a very promising career ahead of him in the first division of the English Football League as he had been in talks with both leading Northern and London Clubs.

Lt. Charles Young Williamson MC. 1st Btn. Hampshire Regiment (d.6th June 1944)
Charles Williamson's mother was my Aunt Sybil, and I was raised the first 5 years of my life with her, my grandmother, and my parents. My grandmother's husband, Roy, was a lieutenant in the Royal Corps of Transport in France until wounded home in 1917Charles was killed on the 6th of June, 1944, aged 30 and is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, in France.
Michael Irwin
Pte. Ronald Richard Rattley 1st Btn. Royal Hampshire Regiment
I was told that my Grandad Ron Rattley served in the Royal Hampshires, 1st Battalion and was serving in El Alamein and was misled by the captain into an Italian ambush which resulted in really heavy casualties. Grandad Ron was shot in the jaw and the leg and was presumed dead by the Italians but was rescued and went missing according to war records until recorded wounded and POW in Sicily. As compensation for this, my mother was bought a private education at Caius College in Shoreham. I would love to verify any of this story
Cpl. William Thomas Saussey 1st Btn. Hampshire Regiment (d.6th Jun 1944)
Bill Saussey was brought up in Guernsey and volunteered at the outbreak of war. He was killed on D Day and is buried in Bayeux War Cemetery, France.Graham Saussey
