Pte Joseph "Joey" Gordon 2nd Btn. Kings Liverpool Regiment (d.28th June 1944)

Joseph Gordon, known by his family as Joey, is long forgotten, I remember him spoken of so thought I would add his name to the list.

Joey was killed in action in Italy, I have no idea where he was laid to rest.

L/Cpl. Edmund Harold Airey 2nd Btn. Kings Liverpool Regiment

Edmund Airey volunteered in 1940. "Bl**dy fool!", his father's opinion, "joining the infantry. With his brains." He was never very forthcoming on his experiences beyond the facts that he fought in North Africa before crossing via Sicily to Italy and, ultimately, to the Battle of Monte Cassino. At Cassino, he was seriously wounded in the neck (sniper fire), left arm and left torso (mortar bomb). Fortunately, he was discovered, and survived, being repatriated to the UK where he spent the remainder of 1944 in hospital. Though he eventually regained the use of his left arm he was assessed to be 30% disabled, unfit to return to active duties, and was transferred to the Army Pay Corps.

Pte. John Owen Saint 2nd Btn. Kings Regiment (Liverpool) (d.15th September 1944)

Owen Saint is remembered on Northop Hall Village War Memorial in Flintshire. He died on 15th of September 1944 at the Battle of Coriano Ridge, Italy aged 23 years. He was one of four young men who died during WW2 that lived in Brookside Crescent (a tiny cul-de-sac in the village). Villagers are compiling information about each serviceman named on the Memorial the findings will be published and circulated throughout the village free of charge. Would love to hear from anyone who has information about the Regiment and if possible Owen.

Pte. Harry Rowntree 2nd Btn. King's Regiment (Liverpool) (d.12th May 1944)

Unfortunately we do not know much about my great uncle Harry Rowntree, other than he was killed in action at Monte Cassino, Italy on 12th May 1944. We have been led to believe that his body was not found, so he is commemorated on panel no. 5. I believe my grandma (his sister) and his parents found it difficult to talk about after his death. The sad thing is that we have no family photos of my great uncle Harry. It would be nice if someone had a group photo of the 2nd Btn. King's Regiment (Liverpool) as I'm hoping he will be on it somewhere.

Pte Charles Rose 2nd Battalion Kings Liverpool Regiment (d.22nd May 1946)

Charles Rose was my grandfather he died in Greece in 1946, 5 years before I was born. He is buried at Phaleron War Cemetery, just outside Athens.

My grandmother age 37 was left with 7 children to raise on her own. She did a wonderful job, returning to work full time to support her family. I am researching Charles' Army career.
