2nd Lt. C. R. Tyler served with D Coy., 11th Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers. These particulars were taken from an envelope addressed to him from Cheltenham dated 13th of May 1942.Jamie Richard Smith
Fus. Robert Tonge 11th Btn. Lancashire Fusiliers (d.14th Oct 1944)
Robert Tonge was my great grandfather's brother. He was from Manchester and served in the Lancashire Fusiliers 11th Battalion. We know very little else of his story apart from what is shown on his war records. Robert died at war on October 14th 1944 aged 29 years. He is buried in Faenza war cemetery in Italy. We would love to hear any shared memories that have made their way down the line or see any photographs.Michelle Snowdon
Sgt. Joseph Fee 11th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers
My Granddad Joseph Fee served on Malta during the whole of the Siege. He was then shipped to Italy and served in the Italian Campaign. His greatest story was when he and a group of others were heading up the mountains to the front line. All their supplies were tethered to a group of donkeys, which in turn were tethered together in a line. The group were making their way under cover of darkness up a narrow pass when the first donkey stumbled over the edge and fell down the mountainside. Of course because all the donkeys were tied together the whole lot went over the edge. Next morning the soldiers made their way down the mountain to get their supplies back expecting to find a group of dead donkeys, but when they reached them they were all alive and grazing on grass. All the padding around them had protected them. Whether the story is true or not we never tired of hearing it and it always made us all laugh.
He saw the end of the war out in the Middle East including Palestine, where they were being regrouped for training in preparation for operations in the Far East. I just thought it important that he be remembered for the sacrifices that he and countless others made in protecting our great Nation at that time of great need.
