World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

8th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers

8th Battalion, Royal Northumberland Fusiliers was formed on the 18th of June 1939 as a motorcycle battalion. On the 2nd of October 1939 they joined 23rd (Northumbrian) Division. They proceeded to France on the 22nd of April 1940. The Division was to be engaged in labour and training duties, and embarked without their artillery and with few of their signals and administration units. The division suffered heavy casualties on the 20th of May 1940, in an attempt to delay the German advance at Arras. They were evacuated from Dunkirk. The 23rd Division was then disbanded due to the heavy losses. The 7th Northumberlands came under command of Home Forces until November 1940 when they joined 3rd Infantry Division as a motorcycle battalion. On 30th of April 1941 they transferred to the Reconnaissance Corps and were redesignated 3rd Battalion, Reconnaissance Corps, later renamed 3rd Regiment, Reconnaissance Corps.
