L/Sgt. James Reynolds MM. 1st Battalion (d.1st September 1948)

James joined the Army in 1939 and took the oath on 28th of October 1939. He fought in North Africa and Italy and was in the front line in many battles. He was taken prisoner for a short time by the French forces in North Africa. In a action close to the river Sangro in Italy James won the Military Medal, but he was wounded by grenade fragments. This action and James Reynolds are mentioned in the book "Always a Fusilier by C Northcote Parkinson" Page 170 He was wounded a number of times and this caught up with him in 1948 when he died as a result of his war wounds. I have James Military records and I have a copy of Always a Fusilier. I would be interested in any other information that is available with regard to my father.

Anthony Reynolds

L/Cpl. Edmund Gerald "Paddy" Bradley 1st Btn. Royal Fusiliers

Edmund Bradley was a member of the Regular Army from 1936 to 1946. He served with the 1st Royal Fusiliers in India, North Africa and Syria. He was captured by the Vichy French June 1941 and repatriated July 1941, he then served in Iraq and Europe.

W/O. Robert William Friend 1st Btn. Royal Fusiliers

My father in law, Robert Friend, enlisted as a boy of 14 into the Regular Army, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on 3rd May 1935 for a period of 9 years with the Colours after his 18th birthday. Of course he continued as a regular soldier from 1939 until 1961.

Bob got a foot injury in Iraq 7th of July 1943 and traveled back to UK for treatment via South Africa and New York (a few things he spoke about of his war service). I am trying to ascertain the temporary regiment Bob served in when he fought in Operation Overlord 4th of June 1944 to 28th of June 1944, he received a shell injury and was brought back to UK (North England I believe) for hospitalization.

Any tips of how I obtain this information is welcome.I now live in Australia. Full details of what I have on Bob Friend can be found at www.friend.bnels.com.au. There are two great books which may help researchers of 1st Battalion the Royal Fusiliers which are referenced in the above site.

Cpl. Kenneth George Beasley 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers

Ken Beasley served with the 1st Battalion, Royal Fusiliers.

Sue Madden

Sgt. William Thomas Emery 1st Btn. Royal Fusiliers (d.11th May 1944)

Great Uncle William Emery was killed at the Battle of Monte Cassino on the 11th of May 1944. He was a Royal Fusilier and was shot at the river. I have over 200 of his letters to his wife which I am trying to put into a book to be published. I would like to know anything from anyone who may have known him, or whose relatives may have fought with him. Anything about the Battle for Cassino would also be appreciated, can anyone help?

William Emery was the son of William Charles and Ellen Eliza Emery, and husband of Marjorie Ada Emery, of Ilford, Essex. He died aged 28, and is buried in Cassino War Cemetery, Cassino, Frosinone, Italy.

Stef Parry

Fus. Leslie Victor Hortin 1st Btn. Royal Fusiliers

My granddad Leslie Victor Hortin was held at Lamsdorf between 1943 and 1945. As he died five years before I was born, and there are few living relatives left who knew much of his time at war, what I know is largely based on official records. After serving in Iraq his regiment traveled across the Middle East through what is now Jordan, Israel, Egypt, Libya and Tunisia. They then transfered to fight in Italy and became a POW during fighting at Battipaglia, From there he was transferred to Lamsdorf. In early 1945 he appears to have been involved in "The March" as he was eventually repatriated at Moosberg. If anyone can help fill in some of these gaps or indeed if they knew of him, it would be great to hear from you.
