8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers



   8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers was a territorial unit which served with 1st (London) Motor Division, later renamed 56th (2nd London) Division. They saw action in North Africa, Sicily and Italy during WW2.

Wanted: Digital copies of Group photographs, Scrapbooks, Autograph books, photo albums, newspaper clippings, letters, postcards and ephemera relating to WW2. We would like to obtain digital copies of any documents or photographs relating to WW2 you may have at home.

If you have any unwanted photographs, documents or items from the First or Second World War, please do not destroy them. The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes. 2nd Lt. Eric Fletcher Waters 8th Btn. Royal Fusiliers (d.18th Feb 1944)

Eric Waters was born in 1914, the son of a coal miner and Labour Party activist. He was a schoolteacher, a devout Christian, and a Communist Party member. In the early years of the Second World War, Eric was a conscientious objector who drove an ambulance during the Blitz. He later changed his stance on pacifism, joined the Territorial Army and was commissioned into the 8th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers as a Second Lieutenant on 11th of September 1943. He was killed five months later on 18th February 1944 at Aprilia, during the Battle of Anzio and is commemorated at the Cassino War Cemetery.

L/Cpl. Joseph Vincent Jolley MiD. 8th Btn. Royal Fusiliers (d.21st Jan 1944)

Joseph Vincent Jolley died in the first Battle of Monte Cassino, aged 21 years.

Pte. Arthur Slatford 8th Btn. Royal Fusiliers (d.18th January 1944)

Arthur Slatford was the first husband of my mother's sister Joan Browning. My mother kept two scrapbooks of all sorts of newspaper clippings from June 1944 to June 1945 and I found this newspaper clipping with a photo of Arthur.

Cpl. Oswald Victor Wittingham 8th Btn. Royal Fusiliers (d.6th Sep 1944)

Oswald Wittingham is my great-grandfather. He was transferred to the 8th Royal Fusiliers on 6th of June 1944 and was killed in action in Italy in the September. He is buried in the Montecchio War Cemetery.

Fslr. Edward Ernest Blake 8th Btn (City of London) Royal Fusiliers (d.4th September 1944)

Fusilier Blake died on 4th September 1944 and is buried in Coriano Ridge War Cemetery, grave V.C.11. Does anyone have any more information?

Fus. Ernest Dorlin Royal Fusiliers

Ernest Dorlin was in either the 8th or 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers and was captured at either Salerno or Garigliano. He survived the train wreck on the 28th of January 1944 at the Orvieto North railway bridge at Allerona, Italy with multiple small wounds and was sent to Stalag 344 Lamsdorf.

Pte. Leslie Simmonds 8th Btn. Royal Fusiliers

My father, Leslie Simmonds had the Jerboa insignia on his shirt in a photo and served in the 8th Army. Records are very far and few because of my mother burning his processions a few years ago. He was from Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire. Can anyone help me with details of his service?
