Royal Norfolk Regiment



   1st Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment was stationed in India when war broke out in 1939. They returned to England and were posted to home defence duties. In June 1944 they landed in Normandy and were in action across North Western Europe.

 

   2nd Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment saw action during the Battle of France and were evacuated from Dunkirk. They were posted to Burma and saw action against the Japanese.

 

   5th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment served with 53rd Infantry Brigade, 18th Division in a home defence role until late 1941 when they were posted to the Far East. At the fall of Singapore they became prisoners of war and the survivors remained captive until August 1945.

 

   7th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment was a 2nd Line Territorial unit formed in May 1939, they served with 53rd Brigade, part of the 18th Division. They transferred to 51st (Highland) Division and saw action in France in 1940, most the battalion was taken prisoner of war. Those who had returned to the UK reformed and the 7th Norfolks served on Home Defence duties. In autumn 1942, the battalion joined 176th Brigade, 59th (Staffordshire) Division and saw action in Normandy suffering heavy casualties and were disbanded in August 1944.

 

   4th Battalion, Royal Norfolk Regiment was a Territorial unit, they saw action on Home Defence duties, in the Middle East and Singapore.

The Wartime Memories Project will give them a good home and ensure that they are used for educational purposes.
