World War 2 Two II WW2 WWII 1939 1945

No. 129 (Mysore) Squadron Royal Air Force

No. 129 Squadron was first formed on the 1st of March 1918 at Duxford as a day bomber Squadron but was disbanded in July 1918, before becoming operational.

On the 16th June 1941, No. 129 reformed at Leconfield as a fighter Squadron flying Spitfires. They provided escorts for day bombers and in December 1941 began taking part in offensive operations over France. In June 1943 the Squadron joined Second TAF, converting to Mustangs in April 1944 in preparation for their role in the D-Day Landings. Later that year they took on the task of intercepting flying bombs then moved to East Anglia to provide long-range escorts for Bomber Command's daylight raids. In June 1945 No. 129 moved to Norway re-equipped with Spitfires. They returned to Britain in November and were renumbered to become No. 257 in Sept. 1946

Doug MacPhee was my mother's favourite cousin. His brother Red served in the Canadian army and survived the war. Sadly, Doug went down over the English Channel and was never found. The family held out hope until he was officially listed as killed in action after several years. It is my understanding that he was killed not long after being posted.

PO Charles Lloyd MacDonald 129 Sqdn. (d.21st Sep 1941)

At present we know that Charles MacDonald was shot down over France on 21st September 1941 and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery. My father, his brother named me after him and I am trying to locate pictures of either him and or the brave men he flew with. All that I have at present is a picture of the graveyard and his Mysore Medallion. I have just started this quest and would be very appreciative of any information.

Charles LLoyd MacDonald

T/Cpl. Samuel Hagan 129 Sqdn.

crew members of Squadron 129

I asked my father about what he did during the war and all he ever said was that he was a mechanic and worked on Spitfires. My father, Samuel Hagan was trained as fitter of engines at No.2 School of Technical Training. He served time as a mechanic at the maintenance unit before moving to 6129 Servicing Echelon associated with No.129 Squadron where the Spitfire picture was taken.

When my father passed at 98 he left me with a small shadow box that showed him sitting on the left wing 2nd from left on a Spitfire, along with 23 other crew members, a picture of him standing on a barrel working on a Spitfire, and his Squadron patch.

F/Lt. Mervyn F.S. Young 129 Sqn, 72 Sqn

Mervyn Young with 129 Sqn at RAF Ibsley in the summer of 1943

A good friend of mine was based at RAF Hornchurch in 1943 - Flt Lt Mervyn Young of 129 Sqn & later 72 Sqn in Italy & Europe. He flew Spitfire DV-R (Serial No MH384). Mervyn told me that he was inspired to become a fighter pilot after watching the Howard Hughes Movie Hells Angels about WW1 Fighter pilots. He said his flight commander ‘Wag’ Haw had the same thoughts after seeing the movie.

He flew many missions in Europe including Ram-rod missions in support of the daylight bombing raids, mostly B17’s including the famous Memphis Belle at one time. On one sortie his No 2 Sgt Carmichael was shot down & killed but in 2003 his aircraft was recovered & in Sept' 2003 Mervyn was among the memorial parade with full miltary honours for Sgt Carmichael; lost on a sortie over Belgium & located 60 years later, the fateful sortie was flown while Mervyn was based at RAF Hornchurch.

Sadly Mervyn passed away in March 2006, I enclose a photo taken at RAF Ibsley in his Spit' DV-R (MH384) complete with his mascot logo of Jiminy Cricket.
