My uncle Jack Mooney was reported missing in France on 20th May 1940; it was later announced that he had been captured and sent to Lamsdorf POW Camp Stalag VIIIB in Poland. He was serving as part of the BEF attempting to delay the German advance. After almost 5 years in captivity, he was sent on one of the Long Marches west as part of the German retreat from the advancing Russians. He was killed on 16th of April 1945 and is buried in the Durnbach War Cemetery, Bavaria.John Mooney
Pte. David H. Johnson Tyneside Scottish Btn Black Watch
I'm doing some research into my grandfather, Pte. David H.Johnson, of the Tyneside Scottish. Davey was held at Stalag XXID. Among the materials I found was a 21st Birthday card signed by his fellow prisoners and made by hand, as well as a charming advert for the POW Pantomine of Aladdin at the Kuhndorf Theatre (written by F.E.Cook and L.W Godfrey with Alec Buist and Syd Price helping). My grandad played the Princess.I've so many names and lists of people that he kept in contact with stuffed into little cigarette tins and German newspapers. Can anyone tell me if Stalag XXID is still standing, if so, it's a place that I'd feel the need to visit?
