About
1st Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery
1st Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery was established in March 1943 by the reorganisation of the Maritime Royal Artillery, which had been formed on the 1st of November 1942 by renaming the Maritime Anti-Aircraft Royal Artillery, which had previously been formed from the Bren Gun Scheme, Port Gunners and Coastal Shuttle Service on the 6th of May 1941. On 3rd of September 1939 Germany had declared that all British merchant vessels would be treated as warships, in response the ships had been armed and these guns manned by gunners of the Royal Navy and Royal Artillery. The HQ of 1st Maritime Regiment, Royal Artillery was at Loch Winnoch and they were designated to protect shipping in the Clyde area, sailing on all types of vessels.

L/Bmbdr. David John Robertson 51st Search Light Regiment Royal Artillery
My father Davy Robertson enlisted in the Territorial Army on the 23rd of January 1939, his first posting was the 404th (Fife) A.A. Company R.E., T.A. He was embodied on 4th of September 1939 and his unit was redesignated 51st Search Light Regiment Royal Artillery. In December 1943 he was transferred to 2nd Maritime Regiment, R A and on 27th of December 1943 he was transferred to the 1st Maritime Regiment, R A.Whilst he did not mention a great deal about his war service, he did mention he was a Bofors gunner on a merchant ship. He stated he had no need to fire his gun in anger but did witness other gunners shooting at Spitfires. He claimed his lucky day came when a Destroyer escorting the convoy signalled his ship to vacate the Vice Commodore's position and go back to the tail of the convoy. That night the Vice Commodore was sunk with all hands by an E Boat. I know that he was on a ship that called at India and Burma. He was issued with the 1939-45 Star and the Burma Star.
My father migrated to Australia with his family in 1956 and died aged 64 in 1982. I am currently seeking his Maritime records card.

Bmdr. Robert Jones 1st Martime Regiment Royal Artillery
Robert Jones was my Grandad. He sailed on many D.E.M. ships including D Day landings on an American troop ship. I inherited his Atlantic Star medal when my father passed away. I don't know the names of any of the ships. When I was small I used to ask why my Grandad had a hole in his nose and to tell me how it got there. He said he was hit by a bullet that didn't explode. Now I have learned about his role I feel so guilty asking him all the time to tell me the story. He must have relived the horror of the war every time. I was so lucky to have had my Grandad until I was 15.Helen Edwards
Gnr. Robert "Rab" Bowers 1st Maritime Regiment Royal Artillery
Uncle Robert Bowers told us a little about his experiences of being torpedoed in two ships that he was on and of losing friends. Brave men.M. Nash
