4th Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery



   4th Regiment, Royal Horse Artillery was formed at Helmieh in Egypt in May 1939. It was initially equipped with the 18/25 pdr MK VP. At the outbreak of the Second World War 4th Regiment RHA consisted of C and F Batteries. In October 1941 it was reorganised into three batteries with DD Battery being was formed from C and F Batteries. They served with 7th Armoured Division and fired the opening rounds of the campaign in North Africa on 8th of December 1940 against the Italians at Sidi Barrani and were in action Bardia, the capture of Tobruk, Beda Fomm, Sidi Rezegh and the withdrawal from Gazala to El Alamein. It the took part in the Battle of El Alamein as part of 1st Armoured Division, later taking part in the battle for the Mareth Line and the capture of Tunisia. During this time they were re-equipped with 25pdr MK1 guns, towed by the 4x4 Quad and Limber. The Regiment returned to England in November 1943 to train for the invasion of Europe and joined 5th A.G.R.A under I Corps. They landed in Normandy on 8th of June 1944 and saw action in support of various Infantry Divisions. On 25th of June 1944 the Regiment joined 4th Armoured Brigade and by 5th September 1944 had converted to Sexton Self-propelled Guns. At the end of the war they halted outside Hamburg. Today the Regiment is named 4th Regiment, Royal Artillery.
