W/O. Robert William Friend 1st Btn. Royal Fusiliers
My father in law, Robert Friend, enlisted as a boy of 14 into the Regular Army, The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment) on 3rd May 1935 for a period of 9 years with the Colours after his 18th birthday. Of course he continued as a regular soldier from 1939 until 1961.Bob got a foot injury in Iraq 7th of July 1943 and traveled back to UK for treatment via South Africa and New York (a few things he spoke about of his war service). I am trying to ascertain the temporary regiment Bob served in when he fought in Operation Overlord 4th of June 1944 to 28th of June 1944, he received a shell injury and was brought back to UK (North England I believe) for hospitalization.
Any tips of how I obtain this information is welcome.I now live in Australia. Full details of what I have on Bob Friend can be found at www.friend.bnels.com.au. There are two great books which may help researchers of 1st Battalion the Royal Fusiliers which are referenced in the above site.
