Pte. Thomas Ellis 5th Battalion Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Regiment
Tom Ellis was one of the oldest members of the Regiment in his 30s and many of the younger lads who were around 18 years old looked on Tom as a Father figure. During captivity he showed immense bravery when he refused to give up his wedding ring. The Japanese soldiers threatened to chop his finger off to get it and finally let him keep it as they saw him as a brave man standing up to them. They threatened to chop his ears off and also tortured him with maggots being put into his wounds and kicked and beat him. He tried to escape a few times and was beaten because of it. His wife Daisy had been sent a telegram saying he was missing in action presumed dead but thankfully he returned home after being liberated by the Americans.

Pte. Sydney J. Burnage 5th Btn. Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment (d.18th Aug 1943)
Whilst visiting Thailand last year, and after visiting the Bridge over the River Kwai, we went to a British and Commonwealth Cemetery. Whilst doing our bit there and reading as many of the plaques as possible, I photographed Sydney Burnage's memory plaque. Mainly because I come from Hertfordshire. He was of no relationship to any of us, but I thought I might be able to inform his relatives that we paid our respects, but to no avail.Mark Forster
Sgt. Arthur George Wright 5th Btn. Bedford & Hertfordshire Regiment (d.19th June 1943)
My dad, Arthur Wright died of cholera whilst a POW in Japanese hands building, along with all the other poor soldiers, the Burma railway. They were cruelly treated, starved ,beaten and stripped of all their dignity, fighting for us all and their country. May they always be remembered!
