Pte. Turner 4th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment (d.27th January 1940)

On a recent trip to Fort Nelson on Portsdown Hill in Portsmouth, I found an R.I.P message to Pte Turner from a mate of his in the prisoners' quarters. There were drawings and writing drawn by the prisoners covered over by glass for visitors to read. I've tried getting information on the man but haven't been lucky.

Private Turner served with the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment in WW2 and died 27th of January 1940

Pte. John Eric Badcock 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment

Jack Badcock was living in Abingdon and enlisted in 1939 as a Private in the 1st Line Territorial Army unit, the 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment. The Battalion was called up for active service and carried out training on Salisbury Plain.

Following this the Battalion was sent to France and Belgium with the BEF. At the retreat from Dunkirk Pte. Badcock was in the rearguard action near the canal, where the 4th Battalion took heavy losses. Jack was shot and wounded and received medical care in Brussels before ending his war in a Polish P.O.W.camp Nr Marianeburg. His dog tag reads Stalag V1/A 36870. He returned home after the war to marry my mum. He died in 1981 and is buried in Abingdon.

Leslie Badcock

Pte. Frederick Prior 4th Btn. Royal Berkshire Regiment

Dad, Frederick Prior was with the BEF and was shot in the back twice and taken to a German field hospital, operated on and survived. Then spent 4 years in a POW camp in Poland, where he escaped with 3 other men and fought with the Russians (so the story goes). During captivity he contracted T.B. And when he returned home spent a long period in Peppered Hospital, Donning, outside Reading. I would like to know more about my dad during his time with the regiment.

David Prior

Sgt.Major. John Thomas Astley 4th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment

Jack Astley served with the Royal Berkshire Regiment. He served in Germany and India before the war. He was captured in France on the 26th of May 1940 and spent 4 years as a prisoner of war.
